这个物品出自美国小说家吉恩・沃尔夫的长篇科幻小说《新日之书》。书中主人公塞弗里安所持的武器就叫做「Terminus Est」（拉丁文），可译为「这是终点」。

《新日之书》的背景设定在百万年后的地球，那时太阳渐暗、能源枯竭、文明退化，人类重归蒙昧。小说以塞弗里安的第一人称视角讲述了他因手下留情而被拷刑吏组织流放后的冒险故事。小说中科学、神话、宗教、社会多种元素交杂，构建了一个光怪陆离的后示录社会。
