Direct Flight is the distance a projectile can travel in a single straight line before it's flight ends. At that point, by default, it will either Return if able, or otherwise dissipate.

Projectile behaviours that cause the projectile to change directions such as Splitting, Forking, Chaining and Returning start a new Direct Flight in the new direction.
