Fractured Fossil
Fractured Fossil is a fossil type which allows players to duplicate items, usually rare rarity (Note that fossil cannot be used on unique rarity). Using this fossil on items is typically called "fracturing" an item. This item is completely unrelated to Fractured mods.
It works in a somewhat similar fashion as the Fenumal Plagued Arachnid beast, referred to as "beast splitting".
Mechanics
A resonator with the Fractured Fossil will reroll the mods on the original item,[1] and create a mirrored copy of the original. The fossil should not be used in place of a Mirror of Kalandra to duplicate mirror-tier items, as the original will be randomized.
Uses
Using a fractured fossil on an item adds the "Split" tag to both items (similar to "Mirrored" tag), which prevents the items from being fractured again. Split items cannot be split again, and cannot have Imprints made of them or applied to them. However the item can still be mirrored using a [[Mirror of Kalandra].
Since version 3.14.0, the fossil cannot be used on Enchanted item, or item with Fractured mod, or item with Synthesis implicit or Influenced item. This limit the usage of the fossil.
Vendor recipe
Five Fractured Fossils can be used to duplicate basetypes. By selling five mirrored[confirmation needed because of 3.14 change] copies created by the fossil, to a vendor to receive a non-mirrored, unidentified item. Note that 5 to 1 recipe will yield a non-influenced copy, while the Item sells for much more to vendors will override vendor recipe. Note that this usage may be obsoleted, as creating one craftable copy need to use 5 Fractured Fossils and add Split modifiers to 5 items and potentially lowering the values of the items.
Item acquisition
Can drop in the Azurite Mine.
Can be acquired in one of two ways in the Azurite Mine:
- Is sometimes sold by Niko the Mad for 1,000,000 Azurite
- As a drop from a room that "Contains Fossils":
- Humid Fissure (Sulphur Vents biome)
There are additional ways to acquire fossil. Read Fossil article for details.
