Zana, Master Cartographer | I can't... I don't... Exile, did you know? No, of course not. I don't think Venarius even knew who he was, how could you? But he knows now, and it seems he may remember many other things as well. If Venarius is capable of rewriting memories, he could plant very dangerous ideas into the minds of the vulnerable. We need to find those memories before he does. Don't worry, you're not alone in this. We are a team. |
Helena | I don't know much about High Templar Venarius, unfortunately. The history I study is generally older than that. However, as an Oriathan, I've heard the same decades-old rumors as everyone else. It was an awful thing they did to his mother... if it's true. |

He demanded that I take all of us into the dreamlands, to meet with the Elder. Using the device, we stepped through, setting foot in the Atlas of Worlds..." |

Duelist143 CharacterTextAudio | Painful memories are the ones that teach us, Venarius. Remember that. |
ShaperMemoryFragment1 NPCTextAudio | I am Valdo Caeserius, chief Arkhon of the Oriath academy in Theopolis. Servant of the High Templar Venarius. I begin these writings as a record of events transpired, in hopes that the penning of such horrors will help bring sense to the matters at present. Some time ago, I was commissioned in the repairing of a strange device delivered into my hands. A golden machine found broken in the ruins of Wraeclast. Believing it to contain some dark infernal secret, the High Templar asked that I restore it and weaponize whatever powers it might contain. Though I saw it as mostly inconsequential at the time, it is worth noting, my daughter, a quiet young thing of five, suffered nightmares and tantrums unlike any I'd seen, during those former weeks I spent working on the device. I'd assumed that she missed her mother and was going through a rough patch grieving. Now, however, I can't help but wonder if perhaps it was a sign. I'd considered refusing Venarius, though not in any serious nature. Though my personal politics remain my own, I've often struggled to follow his instructions and rule – filled with such malice and hunger. Regretfully, I accepted his orders, for I know of many families who have refused the High Templar before. They have all vanished now. |
ShaperMemoryFragment4 NPCTextAudio | The Shade nodded thoughtfully. It knew of the device. The machine was a doorway between my world and the dreamlands, I was told. The device had been lost. Broken and torn apart by villains and thieves. The Shade was overjoyed to hear it found, and offered to help me rebuild that final missing part. It seemed too good to be true. We would open the gateway between worlds, and then, all the goodness of these lands would flow out into Oriath leading us into a new age of prosperity. I agreed wholeheartedly – for I feared, and I still do fear, what will become of my daughter under High Templar Venarius' reign. All that the Shade asked of me was to return the favour, when the time came. And as I lay down in the cool grass bathing myself in the soothing sun, I found that sleep once more took my body, only this time, when I closed my eyes there, I also opened them in the cold, empty darkness of my study... |
ShaperMemoryFragment5 NPCTextAudio | Weeks passed. The sun set and the moon rose countless times. And every night, I found myself asleep at the foot of the strange device, awoken to the reality of another world inside my own. I would transition into the dreamlands. In my sleep, I would apprentice myself to the Shade, allowing it to teach me the ways of this strange place. I learnt how to shape and build things from my imagination, forming them in thin air as if by some great, thaumaturgical marvel. It was through this tempering of the mind that I, under its instructions began rebuilding the missing component of the device. And most exciting of all, how to transport such phantasmagorical treasures back into the world of man. When High Templar Venarius visited during Oriath hours, I'd lie to him and make excuses. Arrogantly, I didn't want him to know of the power I'd uncovered. I wanted these dreamlands to be my secret, to belong to me and me alone. Not even my daughter could know... |
ShaperMemoryFragment9 NPCTextAudio | They called it the Elder. A creature of malignant madness, born of that oblivion from before time itself began. Once only an abstract expression, the Elder was given physical form. It entered our realm. It fashioned for itself a bauble of chaos and secret worlds to use as a kind of... hunting ground. This "bauble" is undoubtedly the dreamlands I've uncovered. The Elder came here out of hunger. Preferring victims of a younger flesh, it became the bogeyman, dragging our children off into the night, casting them into its realm of shadow and feasting upon their nightmares undisturbed, for it was imagination that truly satiated it. With such sustenance, the Elder deigned to cultivate something. To... sustain and birth forth its true goal. Its true self. The Oblivion from outside time and space. The Decay. By the gods... Even now as I write this, I feel my hand trembling, and I struggle to keep my mind on the task ahead... The Elder. It cannot be killed. The Watchers, they built the device, so as to travel to and lock tight its kingdom of torment, bringing with them the blade I saw – Starforge – it was called. A weapon capable of divorcing agency from form, to give the Elder a kind of eternal rest... There in its den, amongst the gibbering nightmares of child victims, the Elder became trapped. Starved. Unable to hunt. Held in ungodly chains. The Elder's form may be trapped in stone. But its agency roams free. I have met it. What if someone else were to enter the dreamlands and encounter the Shade? What if Venarius...? My meeting with the Elder, must have invigorated and refreshed its fervour. I must find a way to put a stop to it, before it finds a path to freedom. If not for my own sake, then for that of my daughter... |
ShaperMemoryFragment11 NPCTextAudio | How could I have been so stupid? So caught up in this whole nightmare that I forgot my work as an Arkhon! My "supposed" lack of progress on the Map Device has given the High Templar cause for suspicion. At noon, as I neared the completion of my work, he and his guards interrupted my tinkering with a furious rage! Tossing my machine to the ground, he destroyed much of my research, demanding to know why I no longer focused on the task given to me. Clapped in irons I was led off to the Theopolis prisons for my insubordination. I write this now, due only to the kindness of a friend in the Templar guard, he knows of my partiality to journaling and so as soon as he heard of my capture, managed to sneak in a diary for me scribble upon. I don't know what Venarius plans to do with me. I've heard whispers of public shaming and lashes, but none of that is certain. What is certain, is that the Elder is coming for us. It's coming for us all. No matter whether you are High Templar or the lowest of the Karui slaves, the Elder knocks at the threshold. Bringing Decay... I must find my way from these chains at all costs. Only I can save us from this blasphemy that has fallen upon Oriath... |
ShaperMemoryFragment12 NPCTextAudio | My daughter... My darling daughter... By the gods. So much has transpired since last I wrote. So much horror... I've not a moment to lose, but I need to... I have to... I must write down what has occurred. It's the only way I shall keep my sanity. I believe I'm safe for the moment, so I shall rest and reflect, in the hope that it will give me new insight on how to proceed in this current disaster. Venarius, that bastard... Enraged by my lack of progress on his occult weaponry, he marched me through the streets. "This man has betrayed me!" he shouted as his men stripped me of my robes and beat me with sticks. When I was but an inch from death, he took me aside once more, demanding to know why I'd failed him. In my... in my foolishness, I... I told him everything. I'd hoped to appeal to his better nature, to his higher self, that he might rally the Templar army behind me. Together we could defeat the Elder once and for all! But you should never appeal to a man's better nature. He may not have one. Venarius... he... he took Zana! Held her at knife point. Demanded... demanded that I take all of us through, into the dreamlands - to meet with the Elder! Please, whoever you are, reading this – do not think wrong of me. If it were your daughter's life at risk, would you have done this any differently? I... I did as I was asked. Using the Map Device, we stepped through a gateway and I found myself once more setting foot in this atlas of worlds... |
ShaperMemoryFragment13 NPCTextAudio | The land was as beautiful as it'd been when last I'd visited. The breeze rippled across the meadows and the sun beat affectionately down on our necks. The High Templar and his men marvelled at such wonders. My daughter cried in fear. I felt sick to my bones. As we trampled through the wilderness, it wasn't long before we were met by the overwhelming presence of the Shade itself. The very essence of the Elder stood silently before us. I felt its eyes bore deep into my skin. Demanding of me in visions to tell it why I had returned. But before I could answer, Venarius stepped forward and greeted the phantom, offering his words up into the air: "He tells me you are King of this land," he said, "My poor, poor scholar says that you are imprisoned, that you need a key." As he spoke, the shade stayed quiet, listening and smouldering smugly. "I can be that key for you." The High Templar announced. For a moment more, the Shade did not respond. A perverse, pensive, pregnant pause lay heavily upon us all. Then finally, casting an image at once upon all of our minds, we felt it ask of Venarius: "What dost thou want?" The High Templar smiled. "Why, power, of course." He replied. |
ShaperMemoryFragment14 NPCTextAudio | The shade spluttered into a great shimmering blaze, moving rapidly forward into trees up ahead. The High Templar gave chase, his soldiers dragging my daughter and I along behind. I recognized where we were headed. The forest was as dark as I remembered, and the cave, just as terrible. Before we knew it, we stood at the base of that blasphemous effigy seated atop its crude pagan altar. "Pull the sword from my chest." The Elder imposed and the man, in all his vanity, didn't hesitate for a second. He took the sword and yanked it forward. A great earthquake shook the land! It was as if the very ground itself was cowering in the face of the Elder's reunion with its frigid body. Bursting forth from cold stone, the Elder approached us all. The blade dropped from Venarius' quivering hand and clattered to the ground, a white light in the hilt flickered and shrank until it at last was put out by the great darkness of a tentacular void. Realizing what it meant to look upon its face, I turned and shielded my daughter's eyes, and as the true scope of the Elder befell the High Templar and his men. I could hear screaming and mad gibbering! The Elder did not speak. Visions no longer left its mind. It was free. It had no need to communicate with mankind any longer. As the richness of life fled from the quickly shrivelling bodies of the High Templar and his men, I readied myself and my daughter to flee. While the Elder began to feed, starved from millennium upon millennium of constraint, I took up the Map Device Venarius had dropped and together, we ran... |
ShaperMemoryFragment16 NPCTextAudio | My dearest Zana, Where are you now? I hope, as a father often does, that you are happy and tucked away in the safest of places. I hope you grow up kind and strong, that you love and are loved. It is my life's greatest regret that I will not see you again, but I must do what I can to protect you from the evils of this outer dark. I have failed against the Elder. To be honest, I never had a chance. The creature was too strong, too well versed in the shaping ways. If Venarius had not damaged the weapon I built, that day he arrested me in my study, then perhaps I could've opened a void, forced it from its physical shell and out of this reality. But I no longer possess such a device and the Elder has suckled at my mind so many times now, that I fear I could not remember how to rebuild it, even if I tried. My war with the creature is far from over however. I've no upper hand. But like a cornered animal, I will bite until I am gone. I've attempted to sleep and awaken in Oriath, many times. Hoped that one night I might get to hold you in my arms once again. But instead of my study, I dream of nothing. I know this letter might never reach you, but I write it anyway – if not for you, then for the sake of my own fragile wits. I love you my darling daughter, and hope the best for you, far away from all this... cosmic darkness. You've made me very proud, and I've considered each day a blessing that I've been able to call you my daughter... I must keep moving. I must keep fighting. Perhaps one day, if the gods allow it, we shall see each other once more. I love you greatly. Your Papa, Valdo Caeserius |
ZanaOnDeliveredMemoryFragment11 NPCTextAudio | Another sad fragment. Venarius was a cruel and petty master. Here's a gift for a job well done. |
ZanaOnTheShaper NPCTextAudio | It's all a blur... My father was the chief Arkhon for High Templar Venarius - a cruel and pernicious ruler. Venarius wished to hold the world ransom with his occult relics from the rubble of Wraeclast, he believed they could venerate him even higher in his status. My father was forced to experiment on the map device for him, in hopes that he would uncover some kind of weapon. I don't need to tell you that my father found something worthy of attention. And instead of handing it over, he made sure its power could not be misused, a surety that cost him his freedom and me... my childhood. |
VenariusIntroduction NPCTextAudio | An Exile...? Please, you must help me. I-... I don't know where I am or how I got here. I don't remember my name... I don't-... I don't remember anything. I suppose for now you can call me... Cavas... |
VenariusBossFightIntroduction1 NPCTextAudio | Remember me? When we're through here, you won't. |
VenariusBossFightIntroduction2 NPCTextAudio | What secrets are you hiding in that murderous mind of yours? Let's find out. |
VenariusBossFightGolemOne NPCTextAudio | Valdo had some ingenious designs hidden in his memories... observe! |
VenariusBossFightGolemOneDefeat NPCTextAudio | Valdo's designs were flawed. |

VenariusGuardian1Intro NPCTextAudio | If I must destroy you before uniting mankind, I will. |
VenariusGuardian2Intro NPCTextAudio | You and I were allies once, even friends. A pity. |
VenariusGuardian3Intro NPCTextAudio | I owe you my renewed existence, but that debt only extends so far. |
VenariusGuardian4Intro NPCTextAudio | I cannot allow you to impede the cause. |
VenariusGuardian1Defeat NPCTextAudio | With each new murder you make mankind more vulnerable! |
VenariusGuardian2Defeat NPCTextAudio | Every friendship becomes a betrayal, given enough time. |

VenariusGuardian4Defeat NPCTextAudio | I will sacrifice everything for the cause. Can you say the same? |

VenariusGuardian2MinionPhase NPCTextAudio | To think, I trusted you! |

VenariusGuardian4LaserGun NPCTextAudio | Light of salvation! |
VenariusGuardian4RotatingGun NPCTextAudio | Darkness surrounds us! |
SynthesisTipVenariusIntro NPCTextAudio | I recognise these men! That's High Templar Venarius with his guards. The other man is Valdo Caeserius. A man of science. They are building something together. Something important. |
SynthesisTipVenariusDefendVenarius NPCTextAudio | That can't be right. Venarius was - is - a good man. A pious man. He would not lash out like that. No, he must have been provoked. |
SynthesisTipVenariusDefendVenariusTwo NPCTextAudio | Valdo is shouting at him, you see? Threatening him. The High Templar has no choice! |
SynthesisTipVenariusDefendVenariusThree NPCTextAudio | Oh, dear! What just happened? Was that... because of me? |
SynthesisTipVenariusInterruptReply NPCTextAudio | That's ridiculous. I'm innocent. All the memories we've seen clearly prove that. |
SynthesisTipVenariusNameDropReply NPCTextAudio | No. |
SynthesisTipVenariusRemember NPCTextAudio | Was I... Am I...? I am the High Templar... Venarius? It's starting to make sense now. I sought power to wield against evil... |
SynthesisTipVenariusRememberTwo NPCTextAudio | ...And I found it. Yes, this is a start. This is more than I possibly could have hoped for when I drew the blade and awoke -- yes, of course! Now I can protect Wraeclast properly. |
SynthesisTipVenariusJustify NPCTextAudio | What am I, a monster? No, the real monsters surround us. |
SynthesisTipVenariusExplainEvil NPCTextAudio | Demons, child. Countless. They watch us from the darkness. They claw at the thin veil that keeps our world separated from theirs. A great tide of evil that wishes only to crash down upon us and sweep our civilisation into oblivion. But I will stand against it. |
SynthesisTipVenariusConclusion NPCTextAudio | Oh, little one, it is you who will help me... Your memories will show what I need them to show, for the cause. Every thinking man and woman of Wraeclast will come to simply know that they must unite... under me. It is the only way to guarantee a unified defence. |
VenariusNexusQuest NPCTextAudio | All these memories we've collected... When I gaze upon them, I feel as though I'm close to remembering something important. Like there are memories trapped in my mind but I just can't quite reach them. Oh. Oh dear. Oh DEAR! I've remembered something! Exile, it is time we go to the Nexus. |
VenariusNexusQuest2 NPCTextAudio | I remember this! This place is the Nexus of... uh... something. The name doesn't matter. What matters is what it can do! A doorway! A doorway into these memories! Here. Take them and lay them out in this machine. It will reinforce the stability of the memories. They won't last too long, mind you, but they'll remain long enough to be explored. Build a path to the memories that lay out of reach. I'm sure this will help us. Sure of it! |
VenariusNexusQuest3 NPCTextAudio | Yes, that was wonderful Exile. For a brief moment I felt whole again. Here, let me try something... Hello Exile, my name is-... Oh. Oh dear. I thought, maybe... But no. Well perhaps we can try again. Though the machine seems to keep the memories more stable, they still degrade. Keep that in mind - because I'm not so sure I will be able to. |
VenariusQuestOffering NPCTextAudio | I don't know who I am, but I do know that this... thing here is important. That there are answers inside. You look strong... Could you spare a moment to help an old man? Perhaps we can solve this mystery together. |
VenariusFirstMission NPCTextAudio | How strange... I can see through your eyes. This place seems so familiar, yet... There! That strange object is important, I'm sure of it! |
VenariusFirstObject NPCTextAudio | Oh dear! It seems your time here is limited. Make haste! I feel the world around us dissolving! |
VenariusFirstMissionComplete NPCTextAudio | I... I think this was a memory of mine. It has been corrupted, but I indeed recall fragments... A sunny day at the beach when I was but a boy. I remember the warm sand between my toes. I chose a seashell to bring home... A happy day. But... I do not remember taking the shell home. I do not remember home at all. So much is yet missing... Wait! I remember seeing another of these memories. Where was it? Oh dear. I don't remember... I'll take this with me. I might remember if I take it with me. I hope we run into each other again soon. |
VenariusFirstMissionFailed NPCTextAudio | I thought for a moment I knew that place... I cannot be sure, and now it is gone. Oh dear... Wait...! I think I remember seeing another one of these memories somewhere... Where was it? Oh dear. I don't remember. I must have a look around. It was around here somewhere... Or was it back in that cave? Was I in a cave? Hmm. |
VenariusMissionFail NPCTextAudio | It's alright, Exile. I'm sure that memory was nothing I truly needed... after all, how many memories does a man really need to be considered himself again? We'll keep looking. |
VenariusMissionStart NPCTextAudio | An Exile...? Please, you must help me - Oh, it's you, my friend. I can't seem to hold on to my thoughts for long... Can you spare another minute to help me? Enter this memory... let us experience it together so that we might ascertain its owner. |
VenariusAboutMemories NPCTextAudio | Even shattered as I am, I know that memories floating around like this is not... normal. I believe something terrible has happened to me. What if other men fall victim? What if mothers forget their children? What if... what if the children are left alone and scared to fend for themselves in a world of nightmare... Exile, can you fathom the horror? |
VenariusAboutPast1 NPCTextAudio | I remember nothing at all, save the flash of the sun on my mortal skin in a dream. I was a living man. I know I was. Ask me again when we have retrieved further memories, and I shall hopefully have more to tell you. |
VenariusAboutPast2 NPCTextAudio | I was... a good man! I fought for God. I remember saying so. That symbol... the Descry... it stirs my half-remembered blood to think of it. I wanted to do good things. Important things. Can you imagine finding the truth of oneself on the wrong side of morality? I have thought long on this fearful notion... but now I know, exile, and that relieves me. I am no longer afraid to recover more of my memories. |
VenariusAboutPast3 NPCTextAudio | I'm certain now that I was a Templar. Yes, I remember watching their mighty parades through Oriath Square as a child, and I can still feel that sense of satisfaction the day I truly donned the mantle. All of the pain and sacrifice was worth it, to do good, to protect mankind... to protect the children... |
VenariusAboutPast4 NPCTextAudio | I was a Templar, yes, but now I remember that I secretly despised them. I understood that they were a diseased organization prone to brutal oppression. Friend, was I exiled as well? I cannot imagine my resentment would have gone over well with my superiors. Maybe I kept my thoughts to myself and lived a life of quiet desperation, but I feel like I was the kind of man to act. So what did I do? |
VenariusAboutBridges NPCTextAudio | Exile, there is something about all this that I cannot fathom. The memories I somewhat understand. A man's thoughts, a woman's remembrance, a child's sorrow - these things come from the living, or the once-living. They are real. But the ancient bridges that you cross between memories? Those were already out there. They came from no man, woman, or child of our land. I suspect those pathways are not made of the iron we think we see. To dwell on their origins or true nature could send one over the brink, I suspect! |
VenariusAboutItemSynth NPCTextAudio | These are memories, yes, but they are also real in a sense. We feel pain within them. We find real material objects within them. Yet some of these objects are not quite right. It is as though they are stuck, half-remembered. There's a device in the Nexus that seems attuned to such objects. It seems to draw upon their properties to create something new. Its creator must have been seeking something very important in his or her past... I wonder if they ever found it. |
VenariusMemoryRunTime NPCTextAudio | It is time, friend. Energy courses through my being. I sense an opportunity to weave together my memories. Let us abscond to the Nexus! |
VenariusGenericErrorRandom NPCTextAudio | An Exile...? Please, you must help me... do... something... |
VenariusGenericError2 NPCTextAudio | An Exile...? Please, you must help me... do... something... I can't remember... |
VenariusGenericError3 NPCTextAudio | Oh, hello there! I was meant to do something, but I can't for the life of me remember what... Let's try this again later. |
VenariusAboutZana NPCTextAudio | I sense within myself a natural affinity for the curious. I am not overly curious myself, but rather, I appreciate the rare resource that is a scientific soul. The child's work is crucial to protect mankind from the nightmare that lurks... out there. Her work must continue no matter the cost. |
VenariusAboutEinhar NPCTextAudio | That man is quite ...jolly, but he doesn't seem to be able to see me yet. Perhaps that will change when I regain my memories. |
VenariusAboutJun NPCTextAudio | Sometimes I think she senses my presence, but she is too surrounded by ghosts of her own to take heed of me. |
VenariusAboutNavali NPCTextAudio | The revenant looks right at my eyes when I try to talk to her. She listens, but has nothing to say to me. What does that mean, Exile? |
VenariusAboutAlva NPCTextAudio | The treasure hunter has her eye on one thing and one thing only. If she senses my presence, she gives it no notice, for I do not gleam of gold. |
VenariusAboutNiko NPCTextAudio | The miner is the only one, other than you, who can hear me in my current form. We converse at length, and his conversations help me keep my wits about me in this time of loneliness, but at times he seems to speak to others that not even I can perceive. There is too much competition for his attention. |
VenariusWildGreetingsRandom NPCTextAudio | Please! Kind soul! |
VenariusWildGreetings2 NPCTextAudio | Oh, lost again... |
VenariusWildGreetings3 NPCTextAudio | Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... |
VenariusSynthMemoryCoastA NPCTextAudio | Sapinti went on her first fishing trip alone and did not return. When her body finally washed ashore, it looked as though it had been mummified for a thousand years. The fish did not touch her flesh. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCoastB NPCTextAudio | She was perfectly preserved, but drained of her blood. We buried her, but within days the earth rejected her. Whatever killed her took root in that place. The earth soured and we had to move, abandoning her body. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCoastC NPCTextAudio | This memory seems ancient. I do not believe this was mine, and I hope I never learn more of it. |
VenariusSynthMemoryAcidCaveA NPCTextAudio | Why won't you let me leave? I found you so many yellow rocks... this pick is getting dull, and I'm so tired... |
VenariusSynthMemoryAcidCaveB NPCTextAudio | I can't... get up... stop hurting me... |
VenariusSynthMemoryAcidCaveC NPCTextAudio | Oh dear. I don't know whose memory this was, but they were far too young for such cruelty. Sometimes, Exile, mankind makes me weep. Who could create such an inhuman system of exploitation, and for what purpose? |
VenariusSynthMemoryArchivesA NPCTextAudio | I used to pride myself on taking care of these tomes, but the ancient treatises concerning the Vaal... should be burned. He's making me research for him, and the things I am reading about concern the destruction of all mankind. |
VenariusSynthMemoryArchivesB NPCTextAudio | I would think my fears of the end of the world ridiculous... except... it's happened before. I must run... I must flee... and take my secrets with me. |
VenariusSynthMemoryArchivesC NPCTextAudio | Exile, was this me? I'm no master of the spoken or written word, so I don't think I was a scholar. |
VenariusSynthMemoryAshenWoodA NPCTextAudio | I awake to the sound of screaming. My eyes and throat sting. Smoke billows into the hut from outside. Something is terribly wrong. I dash outside and am confronted by a wall of heat. Smoke makes it difficult to see, but the village is in flames. |
VenariusSynthMemoryAshenWoodB NPCTextAudio | I run from the smoke and, to my horror, realise we are trapped. A rival tribe stands at the only exit, cutting my brothers and sisters down as they flee. We've been ambushed. I run towards the flames and leap, praying to Valako for protection. |
VenariusSynthMemoryAshenWoodC NPCTextAudio | Oh dear, such violence and hate... I wonder why the tribes were at war. It's clear this is not something I ever experienced, at least. |
VenariusSynthMemoryBazaarA NPCTextAudio | I see you. You are here seeking answers, because you can find them only in the stories we will leave behind when Malachai and Voll cause our destruction. In this final hour, I entertain the notion that the words I write exist in some form beyond me. Do they go on as dreams? As memories? |
VenariusSynthMemoryBazaarB NPCTextAudio | I have the wildest notion that perhaps you will find a way to pick up scraps of memory, and you, whoever you are, will come across this one someday. If you do, I ask only this: slay Malachai. Slay him for yourself, or slay him for all the lost citizens of the Empire, but, most of all, slay him for Marylene. |
VenariusSynthMemoryBazaarC NPCTextAudio | Oh, Exile, though I am a mere shade with only figments of memory, I can say with certainty that no man has ever felt the nuances of rage and love so strongly. His was the strongest memory I have ever felt, an imprint of his entire essence. His name... was Victario. |
VenariusSynthMemoryBeachA NPCTextAudio | You and I, we're the only ones that made it to shore... alive, anyway. This place is crawling with criminals. Find something you can defend yourself with. |
VenariusSynthMemoryBeachB NPCTextAudio | That'll do for now. I thought I saw some smoke rising just north of here. Could be worth checking if there's-- |
VenariusSynthMemoryBeachC NPCTextAudio | I saw you through someone else's eyes, Exile! That was a memory from someone that knew you! He was relieved to see you. Were you close? |
VenariusSynthMemoryBellyA NPCTextAudio | I take no pleasure in this. It simply must be done. Humanity's purpose has been fulfilled... in me. Within this sanctum of flesh lay the tools I shall use to reshape the world. |
VenariusSynthMemoryBellyB NPCTextAudio | With this act, I sweep away the trappings of mortality, and bring about a new age. A world of Thaumaturgy, and I, its ruler. Farewell, my Gemling Queen... |
VenariusSynthMemoryBellyC NPCTextAudio | Who was that, Exile? I felt such drive and focus. Nothing mattered but my one goal. It was... terrifying. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCaveA NPCTextAudio | It's him! He sails back to me, my Daresso! I shall sing for him. I shall show him the way. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCaveB NPCTextAudio | It's my Daresso! He sails back to me! I shall sing for him, and show him the way. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCaveC NPCTextAudio | The last vestiges of human thought in a woman consumed by madness... she saw her beloved in every passing ship, and sang to them all, never realizing their true fates. |
ZanaSynthAfterCavasEvent NPCTextAudio | I can't... |
ZanaSynthFailedMemory2 NPCTextAudio | Oh... We were just too slow to save that memory... At least Venarius won't get his hands on it. |
ZanaSynthMemoryFull NPCTextAudio | We've collected a lot of memories, Exile. Now might be a good time to visit the Memory Nexus. Perhaps we can lure that vicious little snake Venarius out of wherever he is hiding... |
ZanaSynthVenariusDefeated NPCTextAudio | I don't know that we will ever be able to truly destroy Venarius, Exile, but we can prevent him from taking away people's autonomy. We didn't ask for this duty, but it is our duty all the same, for if we don't stop him, who will? |
ZanaSynthVenariusDefeatedAlt NPCTextAudio | It's funny... I thought once we finally defeated Venarius I would feel happy... Instead I feel frustrated. Frustrated that a man like that was able to lead the Templar. Frustrated that he took my father from me. Frustrated that he released that entity into the Atlas... Frustrated that after all we've done, dangers still lurk out there. When will it stop, Exile? When will we finally be safe? |
ZanaSynthMemoryChambersC NPCTextAudio | Exile! That was the moment Venarius decided to seize life and vie for power. That was the moment doom for men like my father was assured. |
ZanaSynthMemoryGardenC NPCTextAudio | I think... I think this is a memory from Venarius. How horrible. Why would he want to join an organisation like this? |
ZanaSynthMemoryCoastC NPCTextAudio | Hmm, this memory seems too ancient to have belonged to Venarius. |
ZanaSynthMemoryParkC NPCTextAudio | Was that Venarius as a child? I think perhaps it was... society has not changed much since he was young. |
ZanaSynthMemoryPier2C NPCTextAudio | A young Venarius, innocent and helpless. If only he'd stayed that way. It never ceases to amaze me how much a person can change over their lifetime. |
ZanaSynthMemoryPrisonC NPCTextAudio | The most upsetting thing about this memory is how unsurprising it is. It's hard to tell whose memory this was. Certainly not Venarius, but I wouldn't be shocked to hear he was the judge. |
ZanaSynthMemoryCitySlumsC NPCTextAudio | With Oriath in the state it's in, I worry we're not far from tumbling down this same road. At least we can rule Venarius out of that memory. |
ZanaSynthMemoryOssuaryC NPCTextAudio | Confronting one's mortality is always troubling, isn't it? I believe Venarius would not be so humble as the owner of this memory. |
VenariusSynthMemoryAntiquaryA NPCTextAudio | Indexing artefact one-twelve in lot ten, an ancient jawbone. Carvings on the side attribute it to... Valako? This can't actually be the jawbone from the myth... and this... Tukohama's tooth? Hinekora's hair? |
VenariusSynthMemoryAntiquaryB NPCTextAudio | These were in the archives for centuries. Are these what those thieves were after? Who would want these relics, except for followers of Kitava? But that's absurd... best not to mention the robbery attempt. |
VenariusSynthMemoryAntiquaryC NPCTextAudio | Exile, I think a historian somewhere made a grave mistake by keeping quiet. |
VenariusSynthMemoryArachnidTombA NPCTextAudio | I'm a fool to have gotten lost here, but it was getting dark, and I thought I saw a way home. A crowd stands silently around me, their faces blank white, their bodies covered in webs. |
VenariusSynthMemoryArachnidTombB NPCTextAudio | The crowd begins to shiver and shake as I creep between their bound hands. Some moan for help. Others scream as their bodies bubble, and I realise I cannot help them. Tiny spiders pour out of open wounds. |
VenariusSynthMemoryArachnidTombC NPCTextAudio | Eugh, no! I can still feel them crawling on me! |
VenariusSynthMemoryBathsA NPCTextAudio | Sometimes, we in the Brotherhood don't need to harm anyone at all. We surround Drusus in the Baths. He has a family, and that means he is vulnerable. |
VenariusSynthMemoryBathsB NPCTextAudio | He doesn't even protest. He knows what this is. Wordlessly, he backs into the baths and sinks to the bottom. All that remains are the bubbles of his last breath. |
VenariusSynthMemoryBathsC NPCTextAudio | I find myself less perturbed by that memory than I should be. It was almost... peaceful. What does that say about me? |
VenariusSynthMemoryCanalsA NPCTextAudio | The boats are the only way out of the city! Don't you understand? The sky is burning! We have to go! |
VenariusSynthMemoryCanalsB NPCTextAudio | Everyone had the same idea. The crowded boats aren't moving at all. The others scream and wail. Everything begins to burn. I hold my son under the water and pray his death is quicker than mine. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCanalsC NPCTextAudio | Such suffering and loss in this world... sometimes I wonder if I'm better off not remembering. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCausewayA NPCTextAudio | We pack up our camp just before sunrise and journey towards the capital, Azala Vaal. We hear the crowd before we see them. Word of our victory spread quickly, and even the Queen has come to meet us. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCausewayB NPCTextAudio | My family has come to watch the ceremony. As I lay on the stone altar, I hear them chanting my name. It is the last thing I hear before the Queen's dagger is plunged into my chest. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCausewayC NPCTextAudio | I could almost feel the blade. What a chilling moment from a terrible time in history. Far older than I, I'm afraid. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCaveMineA NPCTextAudio | These shiny baubles we pull out of the rock are worth more than their weight in gold, yet we hardly get paid at all! We should stop work and demand our fair share. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCaveMineB NPCTextAudio | Don't worry! They're just sealing the entrance as a way to intimidate us! They wouldn't dare leave a thousand men down here to die. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCaveMineC NPCTextAudio | It seems the Empire was harsher than even its citizens knew. I doubt their bodies were ever found. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCellsA NPCTextAudio | You can't just keep me locked up! I have rights you know! I deserve a fair trial! Hey! You hear me!? |
VenariusSynthMemoryCellsB NPCTextAudio | Hello?! Guard!? I smell smoke! Get me out of here-- please! Don't just leave me to die! Someone please help! Please! |
VenariusSynthMemoryCellsC NPCTextAudio | I fear that man never again saw the light of day. I'm so grateful I was never incarcerated. |
VenariusSynthMemoryChambersA NPCTextAudio | The Courts are burning. Accusations fly. Sinner! Heretic! I am but an initiate, and my patron urges silence. We will keep our heads down while one High Templar supplants another. It is all about power, my patron whispers, and we have none. |
VenariusSynthMemoryChambersB NPCTextAudio | Should an accusation fall our way, we shall be doomed to die with the other accused. Be unseen and unheard, he whispers. This is what happens when men who seek power refuse to wait. I learned a valuable lesson that day: Trust without leverage is vulnerability. |
VenariusSynthMemoryChambersC NPCTextAudio | Oh, Exile, I was caught up in the memory. It felt so familiar. Was it one of mine? |
VenariusSynthMemoryColosseumA NPCTextAudio | With one motion, I cleave a man in twain. A kick sends another flying, and the roar of the crowd swells. I am their idol! |
VenariusSynthMemoryColosseumB NPCTextAudio | I was always meant to be at the top of the pile. Nobody else can compare. And this tiny man, this new challenger, Daresso, will fall like the rest to the might of Barkhul. |
VenariusSynthMemoryColosseumC NPCTextAudio | From the look of the carnage around that 'Daresso' person, I think that ancient gladiator was in for quite a surprise. |
VenariusSynthMemoryControlBlocksA NPCTextAudio | I wear the armor of a Templar, and I walk among the guards, but I am not one of them. My soul is Kitava's to consume. |
VenariusSynthMemoryControlBlocksB NPCTextAudio | The time nears. At the appointed hour, I will open the gates... all the gates. |
VenariusSynthMemoryControlBlocksC NPCTextAudio | I don't think I was some sort of cultist... his urge toward self-destruction was overwhelming. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCryptA NPCTextAudio | He wasn't a pious man, and certainly had a gambling problem, but he didn't deserve to end up like this. I feel like somebody should say something as we cover his tomb, but nobody does. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCryptB NPCTextAudio | The others begin to file away while I linger by the tomb a moment. A muffled banging sounds from within, and I consider rushing to get help... but then I remember, and leave without another word. |
VenariusSynthMemoryCryptC NPCTextAudio | Exile... the sensation... that man recalled another memory while I was in his memory... but I couldn't see that one! Why did he leave, I wonder? |
VenariusSynthMemoryDarkForestA NPCTextAudio | Farrul, lend us your eyes, that we may see past the darkness in our hearts. Fenumus, lend us your web, that we may bind our tribes together. |
VenariusSynthMemoryDarkForestB NPCTextAudio | Craiceann, lend us your shell, that we may hold out against our oppressors. Saqawal, lend us your feathers, that we may be carried to a better future. We call out in your name! |
VenariusSynthMemoryDarkForestC NPCTextAudio | Hmm... a ritual of some sort. I do not recognise the names, though they sound Ezomyte to my ear. Silly superstitions, if you ask me. |
VenariusSynthMemoryDriedLakeA NPCTextAudio | Six moons have passed since the earth supped the rain. The riverbed is dry, and the lake is but a puddle. The beasts here have become desperate and dangerous. |
VenariusSynthMemoryDriedLakeB NPCTextAudio | There are rumours that Lord Yriel's blood-fed crops have swelled, but the fruit they bear can send a man mad. We look to our children for the answer. A child cannot hunt, but it can still provide. The taste is hard to forget. |
VenariusSynthMemoryDriedLakeC NPCTextAudio | Exile... this is a memory I would rather not have experienced. How nauseating. |
VenariusSynthMemoryDungeonA NPCTextAudio | Lioneye's failure against Kaom comes as no surprise. He was always more arrogant than skilled. It is time a real man showed the Karui the might of the Eternal Empire. |
VenariusSynthMemoryDungeonB NPCTextAudio | Shavronne assures me the process will be relatively painless and that my duties as warden can continue unhindered, but as my flesh swells and ruptures I realise I am just another test subject. At least I can fulfill my duties to the Empire before my mind-- |
VenariusSynthMemoryDungeonC NPCTextAudio | Ohh, such might, Exile. I felt so strong, yet I felt I was losing control. Another memory that felt too ancient to be mine, however. |
VenariusSynthMemoryFieldsA NPCTextAudio | I come here on sunny days to get away from the squalor of the streets and alleyways around my home. It is not the cutpurses that bother me. It's the city guard. Even so, a legionnaire approaches me and asks my intent in the fields. |
VenariusSynthMemoryFieldsB NPCTextAudio | I do not answer him, instead shaking my head and holding a finger over my lips. Better to act mute than risk being clapped in irons for the sin of being born Ezomyte. |
VenariusSynthMemoryFieldsC NPCTextAudio | Thank the Gods I'm no Ezomyte, Exile. I'd not stand for such treatment. |
VenariusSynthMemoryFissureA NPCTextAudio | Master's orders were clear. I am to wait here until his return. I cast my eyes to the horizon and see smoke billowing from Sarn. The city burns, and I fear my master burns with it. |
VenariusSynthMemoryFissureB NPCTextAudio | The sky grows red. I hear screaming from the village by the Crossroads, but I will not abandon my post. Master will return, and I will await him. No matter how long, I will wait for Maligaro's return. |
VenariusSynthMemoryFissureC NPCTextAudio | Maligaro... that name rings a bell... was it mine? No... this memory feels too old. |
VenariusSynthMemoryForestA NPCTextAudio | Another child was taken last night, so tonight we wait, praying the demon does not return, but it does. We catch only glimpses of its grey skin beneath the moonlight. We pursue the demon on foot to the edge of the woods. The child it carries does not cry out. |
VenariusSynthMemoryForestB NPCTextAudio | Anaris follows closely, but I hesitate. I gather my will and leap into the shadows, tracking the demon. But I am too late. The demon and child are gone, and Anaris stands frozen, pale as the moon. He whispers something I do not hear and falls, dead. I fear we will be hunted to extinction. |
VenariusSynthMemoryForestC NPCTextAudio | Can such a horrible tale be true? I pray not. It is no memory of mine, of that I am certain. |
VenariusSynthMemoryForestCaveA NPCTextAudio | The world is changing in dark and subtle ways around us as I run. My arms burn from the weight of my young children. The sun is turning blood red, and there's only one place of safety I can imagine. |
VenariusSynthMemoryForestCaveB NPCTextAudio | The walls of the cave we huddle in tremble, but the screaming outside keeps us from fleeing into the open air. Life itself has gone mad, and the sky is burning. The children cry out for their mother, but I haven't the heart to tell them what she became in front of my eyes. |
VenariusSynthMemoryForestCaveC NPCTextAudio | Oh, my friend, these memories are sometimes too much to bear. |
VenariusSynthMemoryGardenA NPCTextAudio | A man in uniform visits. He is from the Courts. He says the Templar have alms for widows like my mother, but she must collect it in person. We go to the church, and I wait outside in the gardens. The sun is setting. I don't know how long I've been sitting here. |
VenariusSynthMemoryGardenB NPCTextAudio | When mother returns, she looks pale. Her eyes are red, and her clothes are torn. She grabs my hand, and we walk home in silence. I lie awake in bed. I hear her crying. The man comes over often after that, with toys and food, but I don't like him... |
VenariusSynthMemoryGardenC NPCTextAudio | Oh, I remember this... Mother was never the same after that day. I wish I had understood at the time... I might have been able to do something. |
VenariusSynthMemoryGlacierA NPCTextAudio | Rami waits at the cavern entrance for the passing aspirants. One at a time he pulls them in from the snowstorm and covers their mouth as I slice their throats. Blood stains the cavern floor. |
VenariusSynthMemoryGlacierB NPCTextAudio | Rami pulls in the last straggler and we make quick work of her. Just we two remain. Before Rami makes this realisation, I plunge my blade into his eye. I alone will lead the Mutewind. |
VenariusSynthMemoryGlacierC NPCTextAudio | What a barbaric memory. Were all Mutewind this vicious? I certainly hope I was not one of them. |
VenariusSynthMemoryGraveYardA NPCTextAudio | As I kneel over her grave, the night sky joins my tears. The earth becomes scattershot, stained by sputtering torchlight. She reaches out to me, and I smile... |
VenariusSynthMemoryGraveYardB NPCTextAudio | ...until I see other lost loved ones reaching up through dirt. The rain smells like leather-grease, and my torch goes out as the first of the dead bursts free. |
VenariusSynthMemoryGraveYardC NPCTextAudio | Why is Wraeclast beset by such evils? My friend, we must find a way to protect the people. |
VenariusSynthMemoryHauntA NPCTextAudio | I know I have no voice as a servant, but there is something deeply troubling here. This manor holds a dreadful presence which permeates the very air. |
VenariusSynthMemoryHauntB NPCTextAudio | When they find the third dead and disemboweled maid, I speak up, but the master of the household doesn't listen. He refuses to even look at me. It is then that I realize... I am already dead. |
VenariusSynthMemoryHauntC NPCTextAudio | Quite the twist on that memory, Exile, but I was never a servant, nor a manor-bound spirit. At least, as far as I know... |
VenariusSynthMemoryIcebergA NPCTextAudio | Nineteen more days in the mountains... I'll never survive, never earn my Mutewind name... I'm already starving and dying after ten... and is that... a wolf?! |
VenariusSynthMemoryIcebergB NPCTextAudio | Kindest friend, kindred wolf. You kept me warm for nineteen days. I will return one day, when I am old, and let your descendants feast upon my remains. |
VenariusSynthMemoryIcebergC NPCTextAudio | Exile! I felt a wolf's fur... whose life was that? So very different from what I expected! |
VenariusSynthMemoryLibraryA NPCTextAudio | I move through the stacks, seeking that one perfect moment from my youth. I once read a book here, its name lost to me, that perfectly struck the chords of my heart. |
VenariusSynthMemoryLibraryB NPCTextAudio | It was as if that book was written for me, and yet, I cannot find it now. There are more tomes here than I could ever pick up and check in an entire lifetime. |
VenariusSynthMemoryLibraryC NPCTextAudio | The words of the story he read were... so poignant... and yet they escape me, like sand blown from the ridge of a dune. |
VenariusSynthMemoryLunarisA NPCTextAudio | I don't know much longer I can do this. Every day, we cart in the poor folk the General has rounded up for the Witch's experiments. I used to count, but I stopped at two thousand. |
VenariusSynthMemoryLunarisB NPCTextAudio | This is not the career the Blackguards promised me. We're worse than monsters. Look at this place! Rivers of blood! Piles of corpses! We were just following orders... |
VenariusSynthMemoryLunarisC NPCTextAudio | We were just following orders. Hollow words. He didn't believe his own absolution. |
VenariusSynthMemoryLushCraterA NPCTextAudio | I don't understand. I saw Bryn die. I held him. The fever that took him was so intense... I remember the moment his body went cold. But now he lives once more. |
VenariusSynthMemoryLushCraterB NPCTextAudio | Yet it is not truly him. I know that. A mother knows her son and this creature is not my son. It is a hollow imposter. My son's spirit is with Innocence. So I go to him at last. |
VenariusSynthMemoryLushCraterC NPCTextAudio | If I still possessed a heart, it would now be broken. We are no strangers to the returning dead, but this was not my memory. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMesaA NPCTextAudio | I've thirsted for adventure my entire life, but I suppose, at eighty-two, the most I can do now is walk along the village plateau. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMesaB NPCTextAudio | I dreamt of magic and adventure when I was younger. It's a shame this world isn't more exciting. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMesaC NPCTextAudio | From what I've seen in my time with you, Exile, the owner of that memory must have been uncommonly lucky to avoid Wraeclast's dangers. Or, seemingly, unlucky. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMineshaftA NPCTextAudio | We're trapped down here. Though we strike it again and again, the Sekhema's seal remains unharmed. No one down here can sleep. My throat is parched, yet I feel no thirst. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMineshaftB NPCTextAudio | The foreman is beginning to show signs of madness. He claims the walls, earth, and even his pick have become sticky as honey. I pray death comes for us soon, but I fear we will receive something far worse. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMineshaftC NPCTextAudio | Some of these events have the ring of familiarity, yet I cannot place myself in this one. I suspect it is simply too old to be mine. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMoonTempleA NPCTextAudio | Lunaris, help me find calm. Help me find peace. Help me silence those who trouble me. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMoonTempleB NPCTextAudio | Lunaris, help me destroy my enemies! Help me take what is rightfully mine! |
VenariusSynthMemoryMoonTempleC NPCTextAudio | Such a strange evolution of beliefs... that is most assuredly not my memory. I know I was a man of conviction. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMushCaveA NPCTextAudio | Help! Please, somebody, help me! I've fallen down here! I think I've hurt my leg! Hello?! Stay calm. I'm sure someone will come soon. I'm so hungry... If I get desperate, maybe I can eat some of the mushrooms down here. |
VenariusSynthMemoryMushCaveB NPCTextAudio | I feel strange... my head feels like it is filled with bubbles. Are the walls breathing? The colours here are so vibrant... oh... my stomach... I'm ill. The world is spinning and, oh, my gut! What did I eat? I feel-- |
VenariusSynthMemoryMushCaveC NPCTextAudio | Wow... Exile... that was a very strange memory. Certainly not my own. |
VenariusSynthMemoryOasisA NPCTextAudio | I cannot escape the feeling that I am being cooked by the sun in a cauldron made of sand. As I dream of water, walking, dying, I see it: an oasis. |
VenariusSynthMemoryOasisB NPCTextAudio | I slake my thirst with chill liquid that sparkles in the sun. I dunk my head, then lie down, exhausted and exhilarated. Today, I get to live. |
VenariusSynthMemoryOasisC NPCTextAudio | Even if I could remember my life, Exile, I am certain no single drink would ever have tasted so good. |
VenariusSynthMemoryOssuaryA NPCTextAudio | Centuries of my predecessors line these walls. It is the ultimate honor to rest with them, supposedly, but I have my doubts. |
VenariusSynthMemoryOssuaryB NPCTextAudio | How would anyone know which bones are mine? How would anyone know that I am even here? Because I recognise none of these remains myself... |
VenariusSynthMemoryOssuaryC NPCTextAudio | I can relate to that feeling, Exile. |
VenariusSynthMemoryParkA NPCTextAudio | People stream down the street towards Oriath Square. I hear their shouts and cheers, and when Mother isn't looking, sneak out to join the merry crowd. Just outside the pens, a Karui boy, no older than I, stands atop the gallows. |
VenariusSynthMemoryParkB NPCTextAudio | I see by the sign around his neck he has been caught stealing. I swear I will not look away. But fear overtakes me. I hear the rope snap taut and the crowd cheer, but I fight back tears... |
VenariusSynthMemoryParkC NPCTextAudio | I remember this well, Exile. I remember hearing that snap in my dreams for many years. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPierA NPCTextAudio | The stench convenes around me thicker than the press of the vagabonds themselves. Though starving, their strength while holding on to one another is surprising. I'm trapped in a knot of ragged bodies, and the men of the Church clap me in irons despite my cries. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPierB NPCTextAudio | I'm not one of them! Can't you hear me? I'm not Maraketh, nor homeless, and have committed no sins. That ship is not for me! Why won't you listen? |
VenariusSynthMemoryPierC NPCTextAudio | I think this is one of mine, Exile. I feel it: at eight years old, I was almost exiled by mere happenstance. If my mother had not found me and gotten the Templars to release me, I would have been lost... |
VenariusSynthMemoryPlateauA NPCTextAudio | I've thirsted for adventure my entire life, but I suppose, at eighty-two, the most I can do now is walk along the village plateau. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPlateauB NPCTextAudio | I dreamt of magic and adventure when I was younger. It's a shame this world isn't more exciting. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPlateauC NPCTextAudio | From what I've seen in my time with you, Exile, the owner of that memory must have been uncommonly lucky to avoid Wraeclast's dangers. Or, seemingly, unlucky. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPoolsAndStreamsA NPCTextAudio | My legs ache, but at last they can rest. We are two days journey from the nearest city, and the trickle of water sets me at ease. I begin to set up camp. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPoolsAndStreamsB NPCTextAudio | My wife bathes naked in the stream. I appreciate her form from the banks. With any luck, we will never see another person as long as we live. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPoolsAndStreamsC NPCTextAudio | So peaceful. I could have dwelt in that memory forever. Alas, I do not think it belongs to me. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPrisonA NPCTextAudio | The shackles cut into my wrists and ankles. The guards are deaf to my pleading, but I am no murderer. If I am guilty of anything, it is falling in love with the wrong person. Justice served, they claim. |
VenariusSynthMemoryPrisonB NPCTextAudio | This is not justice. Any chance at justice evaporated the moment I walked into the courtroom and saw her husband held the gavel. I'm just the scapegoat. It's easy to get away with murder when you're the judge... |
VenariusSynthMemoryPrisonC NPCTextAudio | How horrid! Are all people as corrupt, Exile? Thankfully I'm certain this was not me. |
VenariusSynthMemoryQuarryA NPCTextAudio | I strike the earth once more as I have countless times, but my strike feels unfamiliar. Instead of the crack of stone, I am met with flexing sinew. I examine my pick axe. A dark red liquid froths on its tip. |
VenariusSynthMemoryQuarryB NPCTextAudio | The metal beneath rapidly corrodes. Have I found it at last? I run to alert the General. I'm told not to speak of what I found. The other slaves must continue the dig, but I am set free... |
VenariusSynthMemoryQuarryC NPCTextAudio | I don't think I was ever a slave. What did they find, I wonder? |
VenariusSynthMemoryReefA NPCTextAudio | The storm is bad now. The ship rocks to and fro. The other exiles exchange glances as a guard struggles to regain his footing. Then, we hit the rocks. |
VenariusSynthMemoryReefB NPCTextAudio | When I come to, I'm alone on a tiny island. Little more than a rock, really. I can't see any other land. Even Wraeclast would've been better than this. |
VenariusSynthMemoryReefC NPCTextAudio | I'm certain I was never exiled, and thank the Gods. What a terrible fate... oh... oh, dear. Sorry. |
VenariusSynthMemoryRidgeA NPCTextAudio | Everyone is dead and I'm alone. The Karui swept through the watch so quickly, we didn't have a chance to flee. Men, women, even children, slaughtered. I'm lucky to be alive. But I cannot return home now. No. |
VenariusSynthMemoryRidgeB NPCTextAudio | I'd be branded a coward, imprisoned, and hung for desertion. I've no other choice. I must make do out in the wilds. Perhaps a farmer will take pity on me. And if not, I have my blade. I will take what I need by force. |
VenariusSynthMemoryRidgeC NPCTextAudio | What a ghastly man. I pray it was not me. |
VenariusSynthMemoryRooftopA NPCTextAudio | The last three weeks feel like they've passed in an instant. The atmosphere here since the High Templar's disappearance has been so relaxed, but, while enjoying the sun on my roof this morning, I saw the black smoke billowing from the Chamber of Innocence turn red. |
VenariusSynthMemoryRooftopB NPCTextAudio | The Seneschals have at last elected a new High Templar. Rumour has it they've sought young blood. Someone who can revitalise the Templar. Someone who can bring them into the modern age. Whoever it is, he can't be worse than the last one. The bastard set us back fifty years! |
VenariusSynthMemoryRooftopC NPCTextAudio | A changing of the guard? I don't think this was me, but it feels strangely familiar. |
VenariusSynthMemoryRuinedTempleA NPCTextAudio | My grandparents worshipped here, back when it was still a place of faith. I wonder, did the Gods ever hear them? |
VenariusSynthMemoryRuinedTempleB NPCTextAudio | I choose to believe the Gods did listen, and that I am here now out of that benevolence. It is the only way I can explain surviving the troubles. |
VenariusSynthMemoryRuinedTempleC NPCTextAudio | Was I a person of faith, Exile? I think... I might have been. At the very least, I remember the trappings of faith, though I cannot say to which God. |
VenariusSynthMemorySanctuaryA NPCTextAudio | What is it? You know I am not to be disturbed during my communion with God. It's here? Get it to the lab immediately! I feel a rush of excitement as I review the contents of the crate. |
VenariusSynthMemorySanctuaryB NPCTextAudio | The pieces, aged as they are, still hum with energy. I can feel its potential, and it fills me with hope and terror. I cannot assemble it, but I know who can. I need only apply a little pressure... |
VenariusSynthMemorySanctuaryC NPCTextAudio | How curious... this feels familiar to me. What was inside the box? Perhaps another memory will tell us. |
VenariusSynthMemoryScepterA NPCTextAudio | I'm so very late. This is deeply embarrassing. I fear the wait will be too long now. But this is my one chance to meet the great Laureate and I will not let it go to waste! |
VenariusSynthMemoryScepterB NPCTextAudio | Malachai says he has perfected new techniques that will unlock the raw power hidden within the Virtue Gems. I have volunteered my body to the cause. I feel no fear, no hunger, no pleasure... nothing. I hear only his voice. I must obey... |
VenariusSynthMemoryScepterC NPCTextAudio | Exile, what a horrible moment I just experienced. I feel for whoever this memory belonged to. I'm glad it was not mine. |
VenariusSynthMemorySewersA NPCTextAudio | We walk in absolute silence through the murk. It's after midnight, but the streets above are still abuzz with activity. Hours pass before the streets fall silent. We emerge one by one into a pitch-black room. |
VenariusSynthMemorySewersB NPCTextAudio | As I help our last out of the sewers, a flint is struck, and we are surrounded by light and gleaming imperial armour. There's a dagger at my throat. A setup. Dragged into a cell, the guards laughing. I still reek of the sewers... |
VenariusSynthMemorySewersC NPCTextAudio | Did I lead a life of crime? I don't think so... I expect this story did not end well. The Empire was not too kind to thieves. |
VenariusSynthMemorySlumsA NPCTextAudio | Sarn is the land of opportunity, they said. The cradle of civilisation. Pardon me if I don't feel swaddled and taken care of in this 'cradle.' |
VenariusSynthMemorySlumsB NPCTextAudio | It's starve or steal, and I think I know which one I like better. |
VenariusSynthMemorySlumsC NPCTextAudio | Was I poor and hungry on the streets of Sarn? I think not, exile. This memory feels foreign to me. |
VenariusSynthMemorySolarisA NPCTextAudio | Tonight is a celebration. On this, the night of a Thousand Ribbons, we honour Emperor Chitus for his heroic defense of our beloved capital. Long may he reign! |
VenariusSynthMemorySolarisB NPCTextAudio | I feel fear... and hatred. The Emperor stands before me, and I know this is my chance. I strike at him. I pierce his belly, but it is not immediately lethal. I lock eyes with the man. I watch him raise his axe... |
VenariusSynthMemorySolarisC NPCTextAudio | He killed me. Exile! That Emperor Chitus, he cut me in half...! No, not me. I am no backstabber. I would have faced him head-on. |
VenariusSynthMemorySpiderForestA NPCTextAudio | I'm a fool to have gotten lost here, but it was getting dark, and I thought I saw a way home. A crowd stands silently around me, their faces blank white, their bodies covered in webs. |
VenariusSynthMemorySpiderForestB NPCTextAudio | The crowd begins to shiver and shake as I creep between their bound hands. Some moan for help. Others scream as their bodies bubble, and I realize I cannot help them. Tiny spiders pour out of open wounds. |
VenariusSynthMemorySpiderForestC NPCTextAudio | Oh, no! I can still feel them crawling on me! |
VenariusSynthMemorySpiderThicketA NPCTextAudio | Where am I? What happened? I remember a massive spider coming at me, and then... huh, I'm stuck in webbing... |
VenariusSynthMemorySpiderThicketB NPCTextAudio | My stomach is really rumbling... and it hurts... and it's bulging... and rippling... |
VenariusSynthMemorySpiderThicketC NPCTextAudio | After that memory, I think I'm afraid of spiders. |
VenariusSynthMemorySwampBogA NPCTextAudio | Beneath the summer sun we follow Tarcus in search of the promised land. Before long, hunger grips our stomachs. The doomlands take their toll. Our numbers dwindle, and discord spreads among the tribesmen. |
VenariusSynthMemorySwampBogB NPCTextAudio | Veruso's words quell our hearts, but not our stomachs. In the dead of night, a woman goes missing, and our hunger is abated. We reach the ruins of Azala Vaal alive, but dark deeds hide in our bellies. |
VenariusSynthMemorySwampBogC NPCTextAudio | Exile, this terrible memory is far too old to have been mine. Let's keep looking. |
VenariusSynthMemoryThicketA NPCTextAudio | He told me to meet him out here at midnight. Well, it's midnight and he isn't here, and I can hear wolves nearby. He better hurry up or I'm leaving. |
VenariusSynthMemoryThicketB NPCTextAudio | That's it. I'm out of here. Now... which way did I come from? Was it this way? No. Must have been this way. Hmm... this doesn't look familiar either. None of this looks familiar, and I think I can hear the wolves coming closer... |
VenariusSynthMemoryThicketC NPCTextAudio | Oh dear, what a frightful situation. I don't think I did much midnight hiking, Exile. |
VenariusSynthIncompleteMemoryRandom NPCTextAudio | There was more to that memory, I'm sure of it. We must keep looking! |
VenariusSynthIncompleteMemory2 NPCTextAudio | That memory ended so suddenly... I wonder if perhaps we can find the whole memory somewhere. |
VenariusSynthIncompleteMemory3 NPCTextAudio | I get the distinct impression that there's more to that memory than we've seen... Oh, I hope we find the rest of it soon! |
KiracEnterReliquary NPCTextAudio | The Vault of Venarius has been sealed for years. There's no telling what might be inside. |
KiracKeyQuest NPCTextAudio | Rumour has it this was built by order of a previous High Templar, the name of Venarius. If the impossible components we need are anywhere in our mortal realm, they would be in the Vault of Venarius in the Reliquary. We're going to need to find the key to that Vault. Dominus was the next High Templar, and thus the one who declared his predecessor's pursuits heretical and had them sealed as blasphemous. A load of manure to secure the secrets for himself, no doubt. A man like him would have kept the key close. My gut tells me it's likely in his old office in the Templar Courts. Let's head there. |
ZanaMissionSynthesisMaps NPCTextAudio | My father was dragged into the Atlas by the High Templar Venarius. Surely you remember just how cruel and conniving he was before he "disappeared". Well, I discovered he didn't simply disappear... He was trapped and slain in the Atlas, and now his soul haunts the fragmented memories that are scattered across the Atlas. See for yourself, but... be careful. |
ZanaOnMapDevice NPCTextAudio | The map device Kirac assembled is very similar to the one Venarius had my father put together. My clever father managed to find a few optimisations he could make. I've taken the liberty of enhancing yours in the same way. It's nothing major, but it will help you scavenge a little more out of each map. |
NilesOutThere NPCTextAudio | When I was younger, I served next to some very powerful men. I once caught a stray thought from the High Templar Venarius. A simple picture, nothing more, possible to perceive only because of his overwhelming fear at that moment. I have to assume he was insane, because the image he had in mind was that of a single beleaguered jewel adrift on an ocean of madness. If that was how I saw the world, it would almost be a comfort to believe in gods. At least then there would be somebody who could stand against the tide... but even then... against what I saw... Just an old man's idle fears. Pay no mind. |
ZanaOnMapDeviceAugmented NPCTextAudio | Do you have any idea what you've just done?! Because I don't, and we are meant to be cooperating! How do you know this isn't some sort of scrying orb designed to allow that entity to peer into our realm, or even pass into it uncontested? Or perhaps it will simply turn you into dust when you next attempt to journey into the Atlas! You're playing with tools you have no comprehension of, Exile. You're following in the footsteps of my father and Venarius when they released The Elder. I want to work with you, for the sake of Wraeclast's safety, but... I can't help but question your judgement right now. |
HellscapeNPCOtherWraeclasts NPCTextAudio | Countless times, I have seen the works of man reduced to nothing under a colossal tide of horror. Through countless Shifts, I only saw one Wraeclast survive. It was a world dominated by the shade of High Templar Venarius. You don't want to go there, believe me. We're on our own. |
HelenaOnZanaCaeserius NPCTextAudio | Where do I begin? That woman has had a very uncommon life. When she was a child, her father was tasked by High Templar Venarius to work on what would end up becoming a map device. Both her father and the High Templar would eventually disappear into the portals of that device, leaving her to grow up an orphan. That experience left her very focussed on learning the secrets of the map device, as you can imagine. It was her work that enabled all of this. The Vanguard's foothold on the Atlas. The efforts against the mad Elderslayers. She even did some initial work with the exile The Maven first fancied as a plaything. But when Sirus died... she quit. She walked off into the Atlas, and we haven't seen her since. |
HelenaOnVenarius NPCTextAudio | I don't know much about High Templar Venarius, unfortunately. The history I study is generally older than that. However, as an Oriathan, I've heard the same decades-old rumors as everyone else. It was an awful thing they did to his mother... if it's true. |
HelenaOnTheFirstWar NPCTextAudio | While it may seem like control of the Atlas is constantly under contention, the first war of ownership was actually not too long ago. It's hard to say whether The Elder created it or simply found it in ancient times, but the realm served as a haven from which humanity could be preyed upon for thousands of years. Twenty years ago, a man named Valdo Caeserius, Zana's father, was trapped in the Atlas by the actions of High Templar Venarius. Zana's father learned some measure of power over the Atlas, and became what we call The Shaper. He waged war against The Elder for as long as he could, until his daughter led the Elderslayers to a final triumphant victory. Unfortunately, Valdo was too far gone by then. |
