    Herald of Ash

    Herald of Ash is a Herald skill. It reserves mana to grant more fire damage to Spells and additional fire damage based on physical damage. Enemies you kill while Herald of Ash is active will explode and burn nearby enemies for a portion of the overkill damage.

    Skill functions and interactions

    • Extra Fire Damage: This modifier adds fire damage to all hits, including those from Attacks, Spells, and secondary damage sources. The amount added is equal to 15% of the damage source's physical damage.
    • Burn on kill: While Herald of Ash is active, when an enemy is killed, enemies within a radius from the killed enemy receive a burning debuff based on the overkill damage. Overkill damage refers to total excess damage of the killing hit over the monster's remaing Life and Energy Shield, including non-fire damage. The burning damage is affected by increased/more Burning Damage and increased/more Damage Over Time, as well as damage over time multipliers that apply to all damage or Fire damage. The debuff is not an Ignite, and is not affected by modifiers to Ignite or Ailments.
    • Increased Fire Damage: The Buff grants 0.75% increased Fire Damage from quality applies globally to all fire damage, including the extra fire damage effect of Herald of Ash.
    • More Spell Fire Damage: The more Spell Fire Damage applies globally to all spells, including spells with Modifiers to Spell Damage apply to this Skill's Damage Over Time effect. It does not apply to damage over time from spells without this modifier, such as Righteous Fire.
    • More Burning Damage: Unlike the more Spell Fire Damage, the more Burning Damage is not global. It only affects the burning debuff created by Herald of Ash itself.
    • Support gems: Any support gems (with the exception of Enhance Support) linked to the Herald of Ash will only affect the burn damage caused by the debuff, not the global modifiers. For example, linking Item Rarity Support to Herald of Ash will only apply rarity bonus to the enemies who die from the burn damage caused by Herald of Ash ignition.
    • Area of Effect: Area of Effect modifiers from passives, items, and gems affect the radius of the on-kill effect.
    • Culling Strike: When using an attack with culling strike, the overkill effect will only apply if the damage from the killing hit would have taken the monster to less than 0 life.

    Strategy

    • In the case where enemy death occurs uniformly at random with respect to damage dealt, the chance of an enemy dying from a particular hit is proportional to the damage the hit deals. The mean overkill damage for that hit is half the damage of the hit. This makes the mean overkill damage overall equal to
    0.5*(mean damage2)/mean damage
