[UNUSED] Fling out projectiles in front of you. Every third attack fires a single, piercing, more powerful projectile at the center, and you dash forward with it.
ExplosiveArrow
[UNUSED] Places a projectile portal. With two portals active, any of your projectiles that impact one portal will be teleported to the other portal, retaining their direction and speed. In layman's terms, speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out.

This spell creates ethereal blades which orbit in an area around you, dealing damage every 0.6 seconds to all enemies in their radius. As more blades are added, the damage becomes greater and more frequent.
IceShield
Conjures an icy barrier that chills enemies when they hit you. You drop chilled ground while moving, and take less Fire and Physical damage while stationary.
FireTrap
Throws multiple traps that explode when triggered, dealing fire damage to surrounding enemies and leaving areas of burning ground that damages enemies who walk through them.
PhaseRun
Gain a buff that makes you faster, harder to detect, and grants Phasing, letting you pass through enemies. Performing any skill replaces this buff with one that boosts melee physical damage of skills you use yourself (it will not apply to your melee skills used by totems). Consumes Frenzy Charges to increase duration.
Backstab
A dagger skill that deals a critical strike and additional damage to an enemy if the attack is made from behind the enemy. Has high mana cost and cooldown

When commanded, this Graft will call forth a devastating tornado which rapidly deals cold damage to Enemies within it. When you Critically Strike with an Attack while the Tornado is active, it will fire off a nova of icicle projectiles.

While equipped, this Graft will periodically fling icy mortars at Enemies in range that are Chilled or Frozen.

When commanded, this Graft will call down a ring of lightning bolts, dealing lightning damage and leaving behind Radiant ground.

While Enemies are nearby, this Graft will periodically bring Lightning-Imbued Clones of you into being. These Clones will move towards the nearest Enemy, detonating and leaving behind shocked ground.
ArcanistBrandGem
When commanded, this Graft will summon forth a field of grasping hands, each of which clutches an enervating orb of Lightning. When an Enemy is near a hand, the orb it clutches will detonate to deal Lightning Damage and Sap on Hit.

On Critically Striking an Enemy, this Graft will apply a stack of Jolt to you. Jolt grants more maximum Attack Damage at the cost of taking increased Damage, and can stack up to 10 times.
IceSpear
When you use an Offering skill, this Graft will summon an army of Hiveborn Breach Monsters to do your bidding. These summoned monsters have their Physical Damage converted to Cold, and have a chance to apply Brittle on Hit.
BloodOffering
Consumes a corpse, and sacrifices a portion of your life, granting your minions life regeneration based on the life sacrificed, and a bonus to damage. The skill consumes other nearby corpses, increasing the duration and life regeneration for each corpse consumed.
IntelligenceGem
Moves damage from nearby enemies to the target enemy. They are healed for the amount of damage moved.
FireWeapon
Infuse the player's current weapon with additional fire damage for a short time.
ShockNova
Casts a ring of Lightning around you, followed by a larger Lightning nova. Each effect hits enemies caught in their area with Lightning Damage.
InfernalSwarm
Fire damages and ignites those around a targeted enemy. This effect chains and repeats on other enemy targets.
LighteningTouch
While you channel this skill, it releases pulses of electrical energy, dealing lightning damage in a semicircular area in front of you.
RighteousFire
Engulfs you in magical lightning that rapidly damages nearby enemies and drains your mana. Your critical strike chance is substantially increased while under this effect. The effect ends when you have no mana remaining.

Fires a burst of three piercing projectiles in an arc in front of you.
SummonSkeletons
Summons slow moving skeletal minions that decay over time. Does not require a corpse to be consumed.

Skill Gems I: The Basics

In Path of Exile, all of your skills (other than your default attack) come from items called 'skill gems'. Skill gems must be socketed into your equipped weapons and armour in order for you to be able to use the skill they grant. It doesn't matter which item the gem is socketed into, but the socket has to match the colour of the gem. In other words, red skill gems can go in red sockets, and can't go in blue or green sockets. Support gems work very similarly to skill gems, except they don't grant you a skill by themselves. Instead, support gems can augment the skill gems they are linked to. Not all skill and support gems work together; You can't use a 'Melee Physical Damage Support' with a spell, for example.

For a support gem to properly augment a skill gem, both the skill and support gems must be socketed in linked sockets. If they aren't linked, the support will have no effect. You can tell whether or not your support gem is affecting your skill gem by looking at the on-screen skill icon. Properly linked support gems add a little letter to the skill icon on the user interface. Most support gems also change the mana cost of the skills they're supporting.

You can add or remove your skill and support gems at any time, so don't be afraid to experiment with strange gem combinations.

Skill Gems II: Requirements and Restrictions

Support and skill gems, like other items, have level and attribute requirements. Unlike other items, gems can level up, and when a gem levels up, its level and attribute requirements can change. If you level a gem past the point that you can use it, or if your attributes change and disable a gem, the entire item the gem is socketed in will also be disabled. That means it's worth checking whether or not you should level up gems that don't require your primary attributes. Sometimes it's better not to level up a gem!

A skill gem's features can change when it levels up, including the requirements to use it.

You may find that you want to use the same support gem for multiple skills. Simply socket that support in the same item as the skills you wish to support and make sure they are all linked. The support gem doesn't have to be adjacent to the skill gems you want to support; they just have to all be part of the same group of linked sockets. You may also find that you want the same skill to be supported by multiple support gems. The requirements for this are the same.

Supports That Change Skill Source:

Some support gems will significantly change the way the supported skills behave. A spell supported by the 'Spell Totem' support will now summon a totem to cast the spell for you, and you won't be able to cast the spell yourself. The same is true for the 'Trap' support and the two Mine supports, 'High-Impact Mine' and 'Blastchain Mine.'

Triggerable Supports:

Some support gems can be used to trigger a skill automatically. The 'Cast on Critical Strike Support' gem casts the spells it is supporting whenever you get a critical strike with an attack it is also supporting. Any spell supported this way can only be triggered and can no longer be cast manually, similar to how the Spell Totem Support works. Skills being supported by multiple trigger gems won't work at all. Keep this in mind when deciding which skills and supports you want to use.

Gems

Skill Gemss and Support Gemss are usually referred to as skill gems and support gem in in-game item mod and passive skills. In item filter and gaming community they are still refer as Skill gem.

Gems must be equipped in Item sockets before their use. Skill Gemss grant an active skill for the player to use and are further augmented by linked support skill gems. There are currently 276 different active skill gems and 177 support skill gems in the game, for a total of 453.

Skill gems are not to be confused with Passive skills, which provide constant Stats and are mainly earned through Character levelling. To avoid confusion, some players simply refer to both types of these items as "gems". The "Skill gem" in in-game modifier also refer to Active skill gems exclusively.

Obtaining gems

There are several methods of obtaining skills and support gems:

Gem levels

Experience

  • Socketed gems gain 10% of the experience your character earns, calculated before any level penalties.
  • The number of gems you have equipped has no effect on the rate of experience gain.
  • Gems do not lose experience when you die.
  • Items with +experience% gain do affect gems.
  • Gems socketed in inactive weapon slots do gain experience.
  • Gems may be traded like normal items and they will retain their experience.

Once a gem has enough experience to level up, it will stop gaining experience and a level–up icon will appear on the right of the screen and in the inventory menu. Left–clicking it will level up the gem, right–clicking the icon will hide it on the side of the screen, but it will still be accessible in the inventory menu. Not levelling up a gem is useful in some situations.

As gems level up, the abilities they grant get better, but the requirements to equip them also increase, as well as the mana cost for active skills. Each gem level, the exile must have both the attribute corresponding to gem colour and a character level high enough to meet its increased requirements. If a gem gains enough experience to level up, but the exile currently does not meet the requirements, the level–up icon will appear greyed out and not be useable until the requirements are met. For specifics, see the lists of active skills and support gems below.

Each gem has a cap beyond which it can not gain any further experience and can not advance any more levels through experience; for most gems this cap is at 20. There are, however, ways to increase the level of a gem beyond 20.

They can be placed in items with modifiers such as the Paragon's - +1 to Level of Socketed Gems (Prefix) or certain IncursionItemCorruptionCorruptions, or certain unique items such as Frostferno. They can also be linked with the support gems Empower Support, Awakened Added Fire Damage Support, Awakened Added Cold Damage Support, Awakened Added Lightning Damage Support, Awakened Added Chaos Damage Support, Awakened Blasphemy Support, and Awakened Generosity Support, and corrupting a gem can raise its level permanently (ignores level cap, suggest corrupting when the gem is at level 20).

Attribute and level requirements no longer increase when using any of those methods with the exception of corrupting the gem itself.

For example, by combining these three methods, the level of a skill gem can get as high as level 32. One way to do this is to have a Frostferno with two additional instances of the +2 to Level of Socketed Fire Gems and +2 to Level of Socketed Cold Gems modifiers via corruption, then socket a corrupted level 21 Elemental Hit gem in to the Frostferno item. This is now a level 29 Elemental Hit. Now support it with a corrupted level 4 Empower Support, increasing the Elemental Hit's level by 3 to bring it to level 32.

Quality

A CurrencyGemQualityGemcutter's Prism can be used to upgrade a gem's quality. Adding quality to a gem will add an additional effect to the skill. The exact modifications quality gives to the gem are displayed in the detailed view (hover over the item and hold Alt).

The effect of quality scales with the base quality effect, however, only whole numbers will be granted (and thus the effect will always be rounded down); for example 3% quality on a gem with 0.5% effect will only grant 1% effect and not 1.5% effect. Effects that have some degree of fractions naturally are rounded to their natural bases (i.e. seconds will be rounded to milliseconds, etc.).

Gems with alternate quality effects can be found in Grand Heists. They are prefaced as "Anomalous", "Divergent", or "Phantasmal" instead of "Superior".

Corruption

Like most items, gems can be IncursionItemCorruptionCorrupted using a CurrencyVaalVaal Orb. Corruption on gems can potentially lift the level or quality percentage of a gem above the maximum of 20. Corruption can also convert a gem into its Vaal skill equivalent, if one exists. It's suggested that you apply Corruption to a Skill Gem when the Skill gem is at level 20, 20% quality or both in order for corruption to potentially exceed the cap.

After the release of Incursion league, it became possible to achieve "double-corruption" of a gem by using the Lapidary Lens device in The Temple of Atzoatl. The device corrupts a skill or a support gem twice, which makes possible to apply two different effects of corruption at once. This allows to receive a level 21 gem with 23% quality.
